CHARACTERS

 

SHITE, an old man with a bandana wrapt around his mad bush of gray hair. He is an apparition of

JAIME DE ANGULO, a lokapala or spirit of place, the spirit of the hills at Big Sur.

WAKI, a traveler with an interest in folk-lore. He has walked with a backpack from the hot springs and Buddhist retreat center at Tassajara, which lies north and east, far into the rugged manzanita covered hills behind Monterey .

SECOND SHITE, or the SHITE in his second apparition, Jaime de Angulo's spirit, which is clad in a cover of bearskin similar to those worn by bear doctors among the California tribes.
